Guards Injured In Fight At Shirley Prison

A guard was injured Friday after a fight broke out at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley. Two other officers were also treated for injuries in the fracas, according to Department of Correction officials.

The correction officer was surrounded and assaulted by an unspecified number of inmates in a general population housing area, said Jason Dobson, deputy director of communications for DOC. The guard radioed for help, and more correction officers came to the scene, broke up the fight and secured the area.

"Six inmates have been removed from the unit and the matter remains under investigation," Dobson said in the statement. "These inmates will be facing internal discipline and DOC staff will provide the Worcester District Attorney’s office with all available facts and evidence relating to the assaults."

The facility was placed in lockdown after the fight, meaning prisoner movement was restricted. The department has not released the name of the officers injured in the incident.
