A man suspected of shooting and critically injuring a worker outside a Boston hospital Friday morning was shot and killed by police in a standoff in nearby Chestnut Hill, authorities said.

Identified as a valet attendant for Brigham and Women's Hospital, the victim shot by the suspect was in critical condition Friday afternoon, police officials said.

State and Boston police said they're still gathering evidence to figure out what led to the first shooting. Police first responded to reports of a shooting at the hospital at around 9 a.m.

Boston Police Superintendent-in-Chief Gregory Long told reporters at an afternoon press conference that the suspect, who has not been identified, then drove down Route 9 into Brookline where he was stopped by police.

"After ignoring multiple commands to drop what appeared to be a firearm, multiple officers, including a Massachusetts state trooper, discharged their firearms at the suspect," Boston Police Superintendent-in-Chief Gregory Long said at an afternoon press conference.

State police said there is no threat to the public.

Earlier Friday, the department warned people to avoid the area near the Brookline/Newton line. The investigation also prompted road closures.

A heavy police presence remained at the hospital before noon, where investigators were scouring the streets near the intersection where the shooting occurred.

A hospital security SUV was positioned in the middle of the intersection, with its doors opened and police tape fastened to it. Several baseball caps were strewn throughout the intersection, as well as a few bullet casings.
