Mass. Will Hold Tax-Free Holiday The Last Weekend In August

Shoppers can buy without state sales tax the weekend of August 29-30, Gov. Charlie Baker announced Tuesday.

The weekend will be the second tax holiday since Baker signed a law in 2018 to make it an annual occurrence. Baker says this year, it's also "a great way to support our economy that’s been impacted by COVID-19."

“This pandemic has created enormous challenges for the Commonwealth’s small businesses, and the sales tax-free weekend is one way that we can encourage more economic activity to help Main Street businesses and local economies," the governor said in a statement.

Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito and finance secretary Michael J. Hefferman also noted that it will be an opportunity to support small business.

"The upcoming sales tax holiday will be an opportunity for people throughout Massachusetts to help support local companies and generate much needed economic activity," Hefferman said in the statement.

The holiday applies to retail purchases up to $2,500. Read more about the qualifications here.
