Everett Mayor, On Vacation, Steps In As Emergency Wedding Officiant In West Yarmouth

Dr. Matt Kalliath and Dr. Naomi Wiens were ready. Everything was all set for the surgeons' beach wedding in West Yarmouth on Saturday: the dress, the beach sunset, the flowers, the ring.

Everything except for the person needed to make the matrimony official.

The reverend booked for their big day was nowhere to be found. Wiens' mother went on a search up and down the beach looking for him. On her mission, she ran into Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria — a complete stranger on vacation — and asked him for help. Could he marry the couple?

While his mayoral status didn't mean DeMaria could marry Kalliath and Wiens, he did have Gov. Charlie Baker's phone number. Quick calls to Baker and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito granted DeMaria special permission to perform the wedding as planned. The governor later called the couple to share his congratulations.

To show their gratitude, the newlyweds will be presenting DeMaria with a gift and their thanks at the Willowbend Club House in Mashpee on Tuesday afternoon.
