Cranston Police Release Name Of Homicide Victim

Police have released the identity of the victim of Cranston's first homicide in 18 months.

Jamal Vasquez, 24, of Providence, was found dead of an apparent gunshot wound on a city sidewalk at about 4 a.m. Tuesday with a stolen handgun on the ground next to him, Chief Michael Winquist said.

Officers responded to an area at the intersection of Harris Avenue and Cranston Street after neighbors heard gunshots.

No arrests have been announced but the shooting does not appear to be random, the chief said.

There was a house party near where the victim was found and police are investigating whether there is a connection. Police are also looking at surveillance video from nearby businesses.

The suspect or suspects may have left the area in a dark-colored sedan.
