The Essex County district attorney's office and state police are investigating after police shot and killed a woman in Saugus. The DA identified the woman as 38-year-old Stephanie Gerardi on Sunday afternoon.
Around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, three Saugus police officers responded to a call for "assistance with a female family member in distress," according to a statement from the DA's office.
The DA says the officers entered a residence to find Gerardi "brandishing a knife." One of the officers fired a gun three times at her. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officer who shot Gerardi is on administrative leave, in line with department policy.
The officer involved has not been publicly identified.
