Chad Smith will serve as the Boston Symphony Orchestra's next president and chief executive officer, according to an announcement Tuesday.

Smith, currently the chief executive of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, said he plans to bring continued flexibility at the symphony, a lesson learned during the pandemic.

"There are dozens, perhaps hundreds, of audiences for the BSO and we have to find ways to communicate with them," he said. "We have to find ways to reach out, we have to find ways to provide that warm welcome and make our organizations more porous and more accessible."

Smith replaces Gail Samuel who resigned in December. He begins his new role in the fall.
