A former Boston police officer has pleaded not guilty to federal charges related to his role in the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Joseph Fisher was indicted in the District of Columbia earlier this month on eight charges, including assaulting a police officer and committing physical violence in the Capitol. He was arrested at his home in Plymouth back in March.

Fisher stands accused of pushing a chair into a Capitol Police officer as the officer ran after another rioter who had deployed pepper spray at officers. Prosecutors say Fisher then assaulted the officer, and Fisher ended up on the ground.

Fisher retired from the Boston police in 2016 after serving in the department for more than 20 years, according to a department spokesperson.
