Local races are set in Beverly, Chelsea, Holyoke and Fitchburg after preliminary elections
Preliminary election season rolls on across Massachusetts. Voters in Beverly, Chelsea, Holyoke and Fitchburg took to the polls on Tuesday to advance candidates for mayor and city council seats to the general election in November. Here are the unofficial results of the elections:
Beverly
Beverly voters narrowed down the race for mayor to two candidates. Incumbent Michael Cahill and Jamie Zarella beat out Philip Venezia and will move on to the final on November 7.
Chelsea
Chelsea held elections for District 4 councilor and District 7 school committee seats. In the race for councilor, incumbent Tanairi Garcia and Marnie MacAlpine are advancing, prevailing over Adriel Adonis Rodriguez. In the school committee race, Lucia Henriquez and Loren Alexander Sokol were the top vote-getters, edging out Celeste Yvette Williams.
Chelsea's Nov. 7 ballot will include candidates for additional school committee and councilor seats that did not have enough candidates to require a preliminary election.
Holyoke
Meaghan McGrath-Smith and Eileen Brady Leahy are advancing, beating out Steve Rosenbush in the race to replace outgoing Ward 7 councilor Todd McGee, according to MassLive.
Holyoke's general election ballot will also include races for school committee and councilor seats that did not have enough candidates to require a preliminary election.
Fitchburg
Four candidates vied for the mayor's office in Fitchburg. Incumbent Stephen DiNatale and Samantha Squailia are advancing to the final election, beating out Stanley Young and Maritza Knight. DiNatale is seeking his fifth term as mayor, according to the Fitchburg Sentential and Enterprise.
Upcoming elections
Four Massachusetts cities and towns have primaries scheduled in early October. New Bedford voters will take to the polls on Oct. 3, and those in Agawam, Gardner and Marlborough will cast their votes on Oct. 10.
A special state primary to fill the Worcester and Hampshire senate district seat is also taking place on Oct. 10. Former state Sen. Anne Gobi left the seat after she was picked by Gov. Maura Healey as the state director of rural affairs, triggering the special election.
Editor's note: An earlier version of this post misstated the date of Gardner’s preliminary election. The post has been updated to reflect the correct information.
