What's open and closed on New Year's Day in Mass.

It's time to ring in the new year.

Jan. 1, 2024, falls on a Monday. It's a federal holiday, so many offices and services will be closed. While you're brushing up on the lyrics to 'Auld Lang Syne' ahead of midnight, here's a rundown of what's open and closed on New Year's Day.

Post offices: Closed

Federal offices: Closed

State offices: Closed

Municipal offices: Closed

RMV: Closed

Banks: Closed

Libraries: Closed

Trash pickup: Check with your local government or provider. Boston residents can check for pickup delays by searching their address here.

MBTA: The subway and bus will run on Sunday schedules. Commuter rail will operate on a weekend schedule. No ferry service. CharlieCard store is closed.

Liquor stores: Open

Retail stores: Generally open, but check websites because the holiday may affect hours.

Grocery stores: Generally open, but check websites, because the holiday may affect hours. Market Basket is open, but closing a little earlier than usual, at 6 p.m.
