5 things to do this weekend, including 'Climate Monsters' and a free circus

August is a great time for self-care. The summer is coming to a close, work is picking up and you need to remember to take care of yourself. This weekend, decompress with a candlelit neo-soul concert or a sound bowl session with a water view. Or lift your spirits with a free circus. Check out our recommendations for events to ease your mind across Greater Boston.

Guests are encouraged to bring sneakers, a yoga mat, a towel, water and any meditation tools. The class rate is $20.

Bow Market Circus Extravaganza

Saturday, Aug. 24

Craving the nostalgia of cotton candy and animal crackers? Head to the Bow Market Circus Extravaganza in Somerville. Along with classic circus snacks, there will be clowns, balloon artists, jugglers and performances on a Cyr wheel (a large ring) and Lyra aerial hoop (a large suspended ring). Adults ages 21 years and older can attend the Circus Luminous show at Upstairs at Bow with burlesque, comedy music and more. The main event is free and tickets for Circus Luminous are $30 — VIP tickets are sold out.

JP Porchfest

Saturday, Aug. 24

Roam porches in Jamaica Plain on Saturday, Aug. 24, to see music, dance and storytelling performances. This porchfest began in 2014 with the aim of creating “a space for a diverse community of cultural workers, neighbors and art enthusiasts to come together – regardless of the categories that aim to keep us separate such as race, class, gender and ethnicity,” according to their website. At 3 p.m., programming temporarily suspends for community hour where attendees take the time to gather and celebrate togetherness. Sam Adams Brewery will be selling a special beer called the Porch(Fest) Rocker for the event. Nonprofit Dunamis produces the festival — they connect people of color in the arts with professional opportunities.

'Climate Monsters'

Opening Saturday, Aug. 24

Does impending sea level rise along the Boston Harbor feel scarily inevitable but hard to visualize? Boston Public Art Triennial artist Sarah Brophy created “Climate Monsters,” an artwork using augmented reality and allegorical monsters, to illustrate climate risk outside the Boston Children’s Museum. The artist collaborated with kindergarten students from Mendell Elementary School and chose the work’s location to help younger generations understand the threats of climate change and work toward solutions. “Using fictional stories allows us to confront the inexplicable by making overwhelming subjects understandable and relatable so we can consider potential solutions,” Brophy said in a press release. An opening event for the work will take place on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 2-4 p.m.
