Person held at Mass. Treatment Center dies following a reported fight

A person being held at the Massachusetts Treatment Center in Bridgewater is dead after an apparent fight at the facility, according to public safety officials.

The 34-year-old was involved in a fight with another incarcerated person at the center Sunday morning, according to a spokesperson for the state's Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.

"The preliminary investigation indicates another incarcerated individual was allegedly involved in the assault involving a closed fist," spokesperson Scott Croteau said in a statement.

Staff at the center provided medical aid before the injured person was taken to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead, according to Croteau.

The department has not publicly identified the person who died.
