U.S. attorney for Massachusetts Joshua Levy will leave his post on Jan. 17, his office announced Monday.

In a statement, Levy called his time as U.S. attorney "the highlight of my career" and noted the "unwavering dedication and extraordinary skill" of his colleagues.

"As I reflect on my tenure, I am equally proud of the thoughtful, deliberative process engaged in by our team whenever making the grave decision about whether to bring federal charges to ensure it is consistent with the principles of federal prosecution,” he said in a statement.

Levy took on the role of acting U.S. attorney in May 2023 after Rachael Rollins resigned amid an investigation into ethical violations. He was appointed to the role in November 2024.

During Levy's tenure, the office resolved charges against McKinsey & Company for the work it did for Purdue Pharma, brought charges against two men for allegedly giving technology to Iran that led to the deaths of three U.S. military members, and prosecuted Jack Teixeira for leaking classified documents.

“We have brought some incredibly important cases these last three years that have improved the lives of the people of Massachusetts," Levy said.

Prior to working in the U.S. attorney's office, Levy was a partner at Ropes & Gray. He also worked as assistant U.S. attorney in the Criminal Division's Economic Crimes Unit.

After Levy leaves the office, first assistant U.S. attorney Mary B. Murrane will take on the role of acting U.S. attorney. Murrane has been with the Department of Justice for 16 years.
