5 things to do this weekend, including 'The Grove' and a MAAM birthday party

I attended Lilac Sunday at the Arnold Arboretum two springs ago and was in awe over the wafting, fragrant scent and flourishing lilac plants. It was a beautifully sunny day, and thousands of people were lounging in the grass and taking in the florals. If you also like experiencing flowers in bloom and want to pretend like we’re in warmer weather, the camellias at the Lyman Estate Greenhouses in Waltham are ready to be enjoyed. There are many more, non-flower-related events happening this weekend, from a poetry open mic night to “The Grove” at The Huntington.

Twilight at MAAM: Birthday Party

Thursday, Feb. 20 & Saturday, Feb. 22

MassArt Art Museum will host a party that starts Thursday night to celebrate its 5th birthday. There will be music, drinks and, of course, birthday cake. The fun continues on Saturday with multimedia artist Julia Norton leading an artmaking event using repurposed and found materials from 1-3 p.m. Museum staff and MassArt students will lead art talks about the current exhibition “Future Fossils” throughout the day. There will also be a raffle for colorful MAAM socks and a tote bag. As with every day at this museum, admission is free. Those interested can RSVP through the Eventbrite.

Open Mic Poetry Night

Friday, Feb. 21

Try your hand at spoken word at an open mic poetry night at Little Crepe Cafe in Cambridge. Interested poets can perform their own work or the work of a favorite writer. There will also be free hot chocolate and meals for purchase. There will also be a livestream for those who cannot attend in person. The event is free for poets and supporters.

'Scott Pilgrim vs. the World' screening and celebration

Friday, Feb. 21

Catch Michael Cera on the big screen in a celebration of the 2010 film “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” The rom-com/ action film, based on a graphic novel series, follows Scott Pilgrim (Cera) as he defeats the seven ex-boyfriends of Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) in order to be with her. Showing at the Capitol Theatre in Arlington, bands Battlemode and Linnea’s Garden will play sets before the film screening. There will be a post-show projection by V.Kash and a DJ set by Wubson. Super Party Bros will set up a pop-up arcade. Tickets are $25.

'The Grove'

Through March 9

The second play in playwright Mfoniso Udofia’s nine-play Ufot Family Cycle is now onstage at The Huntington. The family’s story began in “Sojourners,” which tells the story of married couple Abasiama and Ukpong who have come to America from Nigeria for an education in the 1970s. They plan to return home after their studies but this plan begins to fall apart. “The Grove” picks up in the next generation with one of Abasiama’s daughters, Adiaha, who is wrestling with following her dreams of becoming a writer or fulfilling her parents’ wishes for her future. Tickets range from $29 to $140.

Camellia Days

Through March 18

Hang on to the joy of Valentine’s Day florals at Historic New England’s Camellia Days. Guests can visit red, white and pink camellias in the 1820 camellia house at the Lyman Estate Greenhouses in Waltham. It’s truly witnessing a piece of botanical history — the flowers are 100 years old, and the greenhouses are some of the oldest in the U.S. The flowers are on view each week Tuesday through Saturday. This Thursday, Feb. 20, you can take a guided tour of the greenhouses. Tickets are $10 for members and $20 for nonmembers.
