Chunks of concrete fall on Mass. Pike in Prudential Tunnel; authorities say no one was injured

State highway officials are conducting emergency inspections of the Prudential Tunnel in Boston after chunks of concrete fell onto the highway Friday afternoon.
State highway administer Jonathan Gulliver said no one was injured in the incident.
The debris crumbled on the westbound side of the Massachusetts Turnpike at Huntington Avenue. Massachusetts Department of Transportation closed two lanes on Interstate 90; delays on I-90 westbound stretched to Logan Airport before rush hour.
MassDOT officials said the concrete that fell was not a structural part of the tunnel, and was likely dislodged because of the temperature fluctuation this week.
"Recent freeze/thaw cycles caused the concrete to become saturated, freeze, and then delaminate as temperatures rose today," according to a statement from MassDOT.
The department said its crews are "conducting emergency inspections across the width of the tunnel to identify and remove any additional loose material in the area."
"Motorists should be prepared for increased congestion in the area and seek alternate routes," MassDOT said in a statement.
