Massive fire burns in Roxbury Sunday morning

Boston firefighters battled an 8-alarm fire that broke out in a large trash transfer station in Roxbury around 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

The Boston Fire Department said about 150 firefighters were on the scene at ReSource, a construction recycling center on Gerard Street.

Boston Fire Commissioner Paul Burke said the fire is contained to the building but he is urging neighbors to keep their doors and windows closed because of the heavy smoke.

Burke said a neighborhood evacuation is not necessary, but he is urging motorists to avoid the area.

The trash transfer station accepts material from construction sites.

"You have wood products, you have asbestos, you have wallboard, you have all these things that they separate and then they send it to other facilities to recycle it," Burke said.

No injuries have been reported.
