The Red Sox home opener is coming up on Friday against the St. Louis Cardinals — and Bob Ellis is ready.

He’s an official scorer employed by Major League Baseball and assigned to Fenway Park.

What do official scorers do? They record the outcome of everything that happens during a game, and make judgment calls that affect the official record. Was that a hit or an error? A wild pitch or a passed ball? An ever-poetic fielder's choice? The official scorer makes that call.

For decades now, from his perch in the press box, Ellis has been documenting the details that make baseball the game that it is. He discussed his passion for the sport and for official scoring with WBUR’s Weekend Edition.
