Here's what is open and closed on Patriots' Day in Mass. in 2025

Patriots' Day is the Massachusetts holiday marking the first battle of the American Revolution.

This year's festivities are extra special, as the state celebrates 250 years since the battles of Lexington, Concord and Menotomy on April 19, 1775. The day is commemorated on the third Monday of the month and falls on April 21 this year.

There are plenty of activities marking the semiquincentennial anniversary of the battles, both leading up to and on Patriots' Day. But one event sure to turn heads is the Boston Marathon.

The storied 26.2 mile race is (almost) always scheduled on Patriots' Day, and the combination of the two makes for a unique patchwork of schedule changes. Here's what is opened and closed on Patriots' Day/Marathon Monday:

Federal offices: Open.

Federal courts: Open.

Post offices: Open.

State offices: Closed.

RMV: Closed.

State courts: Closed.

Municipal offices: Closed.

Public schools: Closed.

Libraries: Closed.

Trash pickup: Check with your local government or provider. Boston residents can check for pickup delays by searching their address here.

Banks: Most banks will be open. Check with your preferred location for more information.

Stock market: Open.

Retail locations: Open.

Liquor stores: Open.

Supermarkets: Open.

MBTA: The MBTA will have a modified schedule around the Boston Marathon.

  • Buses: All buses will operate on a Saturday schedule, but some will be detoured. There will not be service on the 55 or 65 route. Find all shortened and detoured routes here.
  • T: Copley Station will be closed all day. South Street, Kent Street and Saint Mary’s Street stations will close from about 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Green, Red, Orange, Blue and Silver lines will operate on a weekday schedule with extra runs before and after the marathon. Note: bikes are not allowed on the T on race day.
  • Commuter rail: The Worcester Line will run extra trains throughout the day. All other lines will operate on a regular weekday schedule. Note: bikes are not allowed on the Worcester Line on race day.
  • Ferries and The RIDE service will operate on a normal weekday schedule (though some RIDE routes may be detoured around the race.)
