Fall River man in mental health crisis dies in shooting with police
A man died following an exchange of gunfire with Fall River police on Tuesday, according to police and the Bristol County district attorney.
The state police and district attorney's office are investigating the death of 38-year-old Domonick Knight inside a house on Langley Street, the district attorney's office said in a press release.
Police said in a post on social media that they received a call around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday from Knight's family members reporting that he was experiencing a mental health crisis. Police said the family reported he had a firearm and was planning to harm himself.
Police said they evacuated other residents from the duplex and those in the home with Knight.
The department said a crisis negotiator tried to speak with Knight through phone calls, text messages and over a loudspeaker, but that "communication was not successfully established."
Police reportedly entered the home at 3:15 a.m. They said they were fired at from the second floor. The department said police fired back, then used a flashbang distraction device and went up the stairs.
Police said they found Knight at the top of the stairs with a gunshot wound on the side of his head. They reported two firearms on the ground nearby. Knight was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Fall River police released the video from an officer's body camera.
Knight’s death comes days after a man who was also reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis died in a struggle with police in Haverhill.
