What's open and closed on Labor Day in Boston in 2025

Labor day falls on Sept. 1 this year, as the nation takes a day off to celebrate the contributions of American workers. It also marks the unofficial end of summer, where we get one last long weekend before the fall chill moves into the region. Many take the weekend get away, savoring the last dregs of the sunniest season.
But the holiday's spot on the calendar this year means it's colliding with one of Boston's most chaotic days: move-in day. About 70% of leases in the city turn over on the first, meaning hordes of box trucks and jam-packed cars descend on the city as renters get into their new digs.
