Field Guide to Boston
5 things to do this weekend, including 'Kim's Convenience' and Arlington Open Studios
During this stretch before Thanksgiving, there are plenty of activities in Boston for curious minds, including a Boston International Antiquarian Book Fair and a celebration of visual art in Arlington. Those, and the much-loved Snowport Holiday Market, are emerging in the city this weekend. Check out our list of what to explore, below.
'Kim's Convenience'
Opens Thursday, Nov. 6
Before it became a Netflix sitcom, “Kim’s Convenience” was a theatrical comedy drama written by playwright Ins Choi, paying tribute to the generations of immigrants who have lived in Canada. Now, a partnership between Adam Blanshay Productions, Soulpepper Theatre Company and American Conservatory Theater has made this staging at the Huntington’s Calderwood Pavilion possible. Directed by Weyni Mengesha, “Kim’s Convenience” centers around the character of Mr. Kim (played by Choi), who runs a convenience store and comes up against the challenges of changes in his neighborhood, as well as differences between his own values and those of his Canadian-born children. Tickets start at $31.90.

Snowport Holiday Market
Opens Friday, Nov. 7
Kicking off the holiday season, the ultimate winter celebration, the Snowport Holiday Market, launches in Boston’s Seaport District this weekend. This year, over 125 makers will be spreading joy and mirth at the outdoor gathering of local businesses. Holiday vendors include Himalayan Artwear, Citizens Crochet, Creation Jute and more. Plenty of food and drink will be available, including Japanese food from newcomer Nagomi Bento and decadent croissants from Làkon Paris Patisserie. Entry to the village-like market is free, but on weekends timed tickets that allow visitors to skip lines are available for purchase, priced at $14 for adults.
Boston International Antiquarian Book Fair
Friday, Nov. 7-Sunday, Nov. 9
Book enthusiasts are invited to come to the Hynes Convention Center for the 47th annual Boston International Antiquarian Book Fair, a celebration organized by the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers. Attendees are welcome to peruse manuscripts, maps and autographs, children’s books, modern first editions, antiquarian books and more ephemera at this three-day event. Speakers include Elizabeth DeWolfe from the University of New England, who will present a talk on “A Mistress, A Spy, and a Rare Book: The Ephemera of a Gilded Age Scandal.” Richard Kopley, formerly of Penn State DuBois, will discuss Edgar Allan Poe. Friday tickets are $25, while entry on Saturday and Sunday is free.
'The Fire Within Her'
Friday, Nov. 7-Sunday, Nov. 9
The Pandora Consort, an early music ensemble “dedicated to reimagining classical music performance by integrating multimedia, interactive elements, and exploring historically under-represented repertoire,” presents “The Fire Within Her: An American Folktale About Women’s Liberation” this weekend. The show is being performed in Providence, Cambridge and Salem. Co-founder and artistic director of the Pandora Consort, Kendra Comstock, wrote the script and directed the production, which blends Shaker hymns, protest anthems and modern folk songs. The work examines the growth of the women’s liberation movement in the United States, covering music from the 17th through 21st centuries. Tickets are free, and donations are suggested.
Arlington Open Studios
Saturday, Nov. 8
Arlington Center for the Arts hosts the 27th annual Arlington Open Studios, which will showcase the creative works of over 80 local artists.
