What's open and closed on Christmas in Mass. for 2025

Christmas comes but once a year. When it does, almost everything else shuts down.

Here's what's open and (mostly) closed on Christmas:

Federal offices: Closed.

Federal courts: Closed.

Post offices: Closed.

State offices: Closed.

RMV: Closed.

State courts: Closed.

Municipal offices: Closed.

Public schools: Closed.

Libraries: Closed.

Trash pickup: Check with your local government or provider. Boston residents can check for pickup delays by searching their address here.

Banks: Closed, though most ATMs will remain available.

Stock market: Closed.

Retail locations: Closed.

Liquor stores: Closed.

Supermarkets: Closed.

MBTA:

  • Christmas Eve: The T will operate its normal schedule for the subway, bus, commuter rail and The Ride. Silver Line service to the airport will run at an increased schedule. Most ferry service will operate as normal, expect for the Hingham line, which will end service early.
  • Christmas Day: The subway, buses and The Ride will all operate on a Sunday schedule. The commuter rail will run on a weekend schedule. There will be no ferry service.
