What's open and closed on New Year's Eve (still 2025) and New Year's Day (ahem, 2026) in Mass.

Welcome to 2026. It may be the future, but there are still no flying cars. You're allowed to feel disappointed.

Here's what's open and closed on New Year's Day, including details on the MBTA's expanded service on New Year's Eve:

Federal offices: Closed.

Federal courts: Closed.

Post offices: Closed.

State offices: Closed.

RMV: Closed.

State courts: Closed.

Municipal offices: Closed.

Public schools: Closed.

Libraries: Closed.

Trash pickup: Check with your local government or provider. Boston residents can check for pickup delays by searching their address here.

Banks: Closed, though most ATMs will remain available.

Stock market: Closed.

Retail locations: Open.

Liquor stores: Open.

Supermarkets: Open.

MBTA:

  • New Year's Eve: The T will operate its normal schedule for buses, commuter rail, ferries and The RIDE. The subway will see increased service after 3 p.m. The RIDE, subway, bus and ferry service is free after 8 p.m. You can catch a free Commuter Rail ride from North or South stations after 8 p.m.
  • New Year's Day: The subway, buses and The RIDE will all operate on a Sunday schedule. The commuter rail will operate on a weekend schedule. There will be no ferry service.
