Patrick Roy is widely considered one of the greatest goaltenders in NHL history. He retired as a player in 2003, but earlier this year he was named Head Coach/Vice-President of Hockey Operations for the Colorado Avalanche.
He played for the Avalanche for eight years, winning two Stanley Cups over that time.
Those who suspected the fiery Roy would have mellowed in his time away from the ice were wrong. The Avalanche won their matchup against the Anaheim Ducks, but the game will be remembered for Roy's meltdown.
"The night exploded into fireworks at the end with Patrick Roy not only screaming at a Ducks player, Corey Perry, but getting into it with the ducks coach Bruce Boudreau," The Denver Post's Adrian Dater told Bill Littlefield. "Next thing you know, Patrick Roy was shoving the glass partition separating the two benches — not once, but twice — and the second time nearly toppled the whole thing over."
The NHL fined Roy $10,000 for the outburst, but the league is still buzzing about Roy's meltdown.
"This thing that happened the other night though has played great. Not only with the fans, it also played real well with his players in the locker room," Dater said. "That's probably the most important thing."
Dater called Roy a "hockey savant." Roy has never failed in his pro career thus far. The season has just begun, but it will be interesting to see if Roy can keep his cool as the season heats up.
