National Grid is deeply committed to the communities they serve and consider affordability a core component in providing safe and reliable energy. While preparing for the New England winter, customers should know about several payment assistance programs and other ways to help manage their energy costs.

Winter bill support when customers need it most

Heating costs can be a challenge for households and businesses. National Grid is taking steps to manage costs within their control and prepare their system to meet seasonal demands – and want to help customers be prepared, too. They offer a variety of services and financial assistance programs to help manage energy bills:

  • Apply for energy assistance grant programs: Income eligible customers can apply for Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) grants. Last winter, nearly 40,000 customers received over $14 million in LIHEAP grant assistance.
  • Reduce outstanding balances: Reduce past-due balances through the Arrears Management Program (AMP) for income-eligible customers. By making on-time payments, users may qualify for debt forgiveness and a fresh start.
  • Start a customized payment plan: National Grid offers customized payment agreement plans to help make monthly bills easier to manage. More than 98,000 customers have benefited from customized payment plans.
  • New: Apply for a Tiered Discount Rate: National Grid recently introduced a Tiered Discount Rate to better serve income-eligible customers. Depending on household size and income level, users could receive a discount ranging from 32% to 71% on monthly electric bills. To be eligible, National Grid customers must be enrolled in a qualifying assistance program such as LIHEAP.
  • New: Install an energy efficient heat pump: In collaboration with the Healey-Driscoll administration, National Grid is helping heat pump customers realize increased savings. Starting November 1, 2025, eligible residential customers who use heat pumps for home heating (fully or partially) can access a seasonal reduced electric delivery rate from November through April. Heat pumps installed through a Mass Save® program in 2019 or later and are on a residential electric rate will be automatically enrolled.
