As the days grow shorter and temperatures drop, National Grid’s programs and services can help Massachusetts residents stay warm while managing higher energy bills for the upcoming winter. Their mission is simple: to deliver safe, reliable and affordable energy along with programs that can help make a difference.

Winter bill help: Support when it’s needed most

Managing energy costs during the colder months can be challenging, but customers don’t have to do it alone. National Grid recognizes the importance of offering bill management options to meet the unique needs of its customers through a range of financial assistance programs to help ease the burden:

· Arrears Management Program (AMP): More than 40,000 customers enrolled in AMP last year, reducing past-due balances and getting back on track.

· Payment agreements: Over 98,000 customers benefited from customized payment plans last year, helping them manage monthly bills more effectively.

· LIHEAP grants: Last winter, over $14 million in Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) grants were distributed to nearly 40,000 Massachusetts customers. LIHEAP is now open, and National Grid encourages customers to apply now and get the support available to them.

· Customer assistance events: These in-person events bring helpful resources together in one place, on one day. Customer Advocates are available to provide details on the programs and services that can help.

New Tiered Discount Rate: Bigger savings based on customer needs

This fall National Grid introduced a Tiered Discount Rate to better serve income-eligible customers. Depending on household size and income level, customers could receive a monthly electric bill discount ranging from 32% to 71%.

To qualify, National Grid customers must participate in a qualifying assistance program or receive a Low Income Heat Assistance Program (LIHEAP) grant.

New heat pump rate: Supporting clean energy and affordability

Starting November 1, 2025, a reduced electric delivery rate is now available for qualified residential customers who use heat pumps for home heating either fully or partially. This seasonal rate applies to electricity usage from November 1 through April 30, helping reduce energy costs during colder months. Most customers on a residential electric rate who have a heat pump that was installed through a Mass Save® program in 2019 or later were automatically enrolled earlier this fall in the seasonal rate.
