“For most of my life, I thought that there was something wrong with me,” says Thomas, a Semester Off student. His experience echoes the feelings of many emerging adults who struggle with anxiety, pressure and uncertainty during their college years.
Young people often head off to college full of dreams and high expectations. The reality of academic demands, social changes and newfound independence, however, can be daunting. Many students feel lost, isolated or unsure of their path. When they struggle, they may fear disappointing their families or being judged by their peers.
According to the American College Health Association, anxiety is now the most common health concern reported by college students, affecting their ability to focus, persist and thrive academically and personally.
It’s not simply about grades; it’s about well-being, confidence and a sense of belonging. And many students wrestle with internalized self-doubt and the misconception that they should be able to “push through” on their own, often without support.
For some, these struggles lead to poor academic performance and even withdrawal from school. Too often, families worry about what it means to take time off, fearing it could derail their child’s future. But there is hope — and there are real solutions.
Like Semester Off, which offers a different approach. Instead of pushing students to “power through,” the program recognizes that taking a break can be the healthiest and most productive choice. Semester Off is a structured, supportive program designed specifically for 17- to 25-year-olds who need time to regroup and develop essential life skills. What makes Semester Off unique is its holistic approach, combining evidence-based practices with a strong sense of community.
“Semester Off changed the goal that I thought I could set for myself.”

Semester Off’s comprehensive curriculum helps students not only recover but also thrive, equipping them with strategies to manage anxiety and succeed in their next steps. Some curriculum highlights include:
- College-level Academics: students take a specially designed Psych 101 course taught directly by Semester Off's founder, Ilan Goldberg, MD, a board-certified psychiatrist who creates a safe, intellectual and hilarious classroom environment to inspire students to be curious about their own and others’ inner worlds.
- Executive Function Support: Semester Off provides tools and coaching for time management, organization and goal-setting — skills that are critical for college and beyond — and challenges students to apply these skills in real time and in the Psych 101 course taught by Dr. Goldberg.
- Team-Building Activities: through collaborative exercises, students develop communication, trust and leadership skills in a safe, supportive environment.
- Yoga and Meditation: students learn to manage stress, increase self-awareness and build resilience through regular yoga and mindfulness practices.
- Mind-Body Connection: the curriculum emphasizes the link between emotional well-being and physical health, helping students understand and care for themselves holistically.
One of the greatest barriers to healing is the stigma around stepping away from college. Yet, taking a semester off is not a setback — it can be an act of courage and self-care. By normalizing the idea of pausing to regroup, Semester Off helps young adults and their families understand that personal growth sometimes requires a new perspective and a supportive environment. Embracing this truth can reduce shame and open the door to real progress.

Semester Off reframes time off as an opportunity for transformation. With its unique blend of academic support, wellness practices and community engagement, the program empowers students to return to college — or pursue a new direction — with confidence and clarity. Semester Off offers hope: a path that honors your student’s challenges while providing the tools they need to flourish.
Thomas’s journey began with self-doubt, but through support and the right environment, he discovered that there was nothing “wrong” with him. Instead, he found strength, resilience, and new direction.
“Semester Off changed the goal that I thought I could set for myself,” he says.
Semester Off exists for young adults like Thomas — for anyone who needs time, guidance and community to heal and grow. Taking a semester off isn’t the end of the story; it’s a new beginning filled with possibility.
