A vital and vibrant ocean for future generations

The New England Aquarium is a nonprofit research and conservation organization that has protected and cared for the ocean and marine animals for more than 50 years. Its goal is to inspire everyone to form a deeper connection to the ocean and take action to protect it.

Opened on Boston’s historic waterfront in 1969, the New England Aquarium is one of the world’s first modern aquariums. Today, the Aquarium is home to nearly 10,000 aquatic animals and continues a legacy of protecting marine life through conservation and research that addresses important ocean challenges.

Here are just a few of the ways that the New England Aquarium supports conservation efforts:

Using science to protect animals and the ocean

The research conducted by scientists in the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life helps inform policy decisions and industry practices to better protect the ocean and marine animals, both in New England and around the globe. Their work improves animal well-being at the Aquarium and in the wild.

Helping others use the ocean responsibly

The Aquarium supports innovative bluetech startups, counsels fisheries on resource management, advises lawmakers on ocean policy, and more. They partner with and advise industry, government and corporations on science-based solutions that promote a healthy ocean.

Inspiring people to love, respect and act for the ocean

From the sea turtles in the Giant Ocean Tank to the whales in nearby Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, the Aquarium offers a window into the diversity of life on Earth. Their research comes alive through exhibits and educational experiences, connecting people to the ocean and inspiring them to take action to protect it.

Helping to create engaged, resilient communities

Decades of research and the location on Boston’s waterfront gives the Aquarium a unique perspective on the challenges presented by climate change. They work with local communities to create a more resilient future and support ocean conservation initiatives around the globe.
