One City One Story: Boston Launches Short Story Program
The Boston Book Festival announced Thursday that Tom Perrotta's short story, "The Smile on Happy Chang's Face," is the inaugural selection for its One City One Story program. Thirty-thousand copies of the story will be available in T stations, in public libraries and on the Web.
Festival organizer Deborah Z. Porter says the selection was difficult, but Perrotta's short story resonated with the committee. "Tom has crafted a story that is at once funny and poignant, exploring the universal themes of family, parenthood, adolescence and intolerance in a fresh and absorbing way," she said.
One City One Story is inspired by the work on "One Story," a literary magazine in Brooklyn that publishes one story about every three weeks.
Guests:
- Tom Perrotta, author of "The Smile on Happy Chang's Face," as well as novels including "Election," "The Abstinence Teacher" and "Little Children"
- Emily D'Amour Pardo, executive director, Boston Book Festival
