An average on-street parking space occupies about 200 square feet. Alternative transportation advocates think that space could go toward something better: a park, perhaps?

Friday is Park(ing) Day, an international event in which cities convert select parking spaces into parks based on a variety of themes. Brookline and Cambridge are both participating. Radio Boston's Adam Ragusea got a preview of the "parks" in the works around Porter Square.
