"It Happened On The Way To War"

While Rye Barcott was patrolling the streets of Fallujah during the Iraq War, his mind was often not there with his fellow Marines. Rather, Barcott found himself drifting to the streets of Kibera, a sprawling Kenyan slum outside Nairobi.

Barcott, a Rhode Island native, is the co-founder of a non-governmental organization called Carolina For Kibera, which works on peace and development projects in Kibera. He founded it while he was an undergraduate ROTC student. But then, the young peacemaker had to go to war.
