Veteran blues pianist David Maxwell has played with the greats from Muddy Waters to Otis Span and Freddy King. His new album, "Blues In Other Colors," blends traditional blues with some of his favorite world influences.

"I've always been interested in what was once called ethnomusicology — now it's all world music. It's not really new for me. I've been improvising this for a long time," Maxwell said. "It's new for the audiences, though, who have been used to hearing me in a more traditional way.

Blues is often regarded as an American form of music, but Maxwell explained it wasn't difficult for him to expand the style.

"I don't see why one has to be limited," he said.

Guests:

Maxwell will be performing two shows with the Maximum Blues All Stars on Saturday, November 17 at the Regatta Bar in Cambridge.

This segment aired on November 14, 2012.
