"It is the beating of his hideous heart!" That's the shiver-inducing conclusion of Edgar Allan Poe's classic story, "The Tell Tale Heart". The Gothic masterpiece was first published in 1843, in the inaugural issue of the Boston magazine, "The Pioneer" which was edited by James Russell Lowell, one of Boston great literary figures.

That's rather interesting, because even though Poe was born in Boston, he had a very tumultuous relationship with the city's literati. Boston, in turn, basically told Poe "nevermore!" and didn't embrace him as it has other legendary wordsmiths such as Emerson, Thoreau, or Longfellow.

But all that is about to change... because the Edgar Allan Poe Foundation of Boston recently unveiled the design of a new statue honoring Poe. It will be installed near Boston Common in October.

Guests

Paul Lewis, professor of English at Boston College and chair of the Edgar Allan Poe Foundation of Boston. You can find photos of the statue here.
