Former Mass. Legislator Takes New Role With HIV/AIDS Health Organization
ResumeCarl Sciortino, Jr. had a relatively low profile as a Massachusetts legislator, until he released a campaign ad that went viral in his bid for the U.S. House of Representatives last year.
The ad cuts back and forth between Sciortino and his father. Sciortino, who is openly gay, talks about coming out to his conservative father as a "Massachusetts liberal."
The ad has won accolades from the American Association of Political Consultants and garnered a lot of attention, but it was not enough to help Sciortino win. He came in third place in the primary in a crowded field of Democratic candidates.
Now, after nine years in the state legislature, Sciortino is taking a step back from politics and into advocacy work for people with HIV/AIDS, as executive director of the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts. He will be the first person living with HIV to lead the organization.
