Doug Tribou hits the road, traveling to Lynn to profile The Daily Item's newest sports editor, Maureen Mullen.

Mullen got her start in the newspaper world in Lynn delivering the paper — a tradition among her siblings. She interned at The Daily Item before becoming a freelancer and writing for The Boston Globe, The Boston Herald, USA Today, MLB.com, and others.

But she doesn't just cover the major leagues. "I covered Little League opening days, too!" she says. She still gets to Fenway Park now and then, but in her new job feels right at home.

  • "I'm a native of Lynn and got my start in journalism way back when — with a paper route, delivering the Item, along with the Boston Globe and Boston Herald. I was a 'subcontractor' for my older brother when I was about 9, before my sister and I took over the route from him. (My younger brother also eventually took over the 'family business.') It was my first paying job."
