This weekend, The Boston Globe Spotlight team launched a disturbing, powerful expose into the collapse of comprehensive mental health care in Massachusetts. The situation is so severe that the state's Secretary of Health and Human Services Marylou Sudders told the Globe she can't even bring herself to call the "state's patchwork of emergency rooms, group homes, clinics and therapists a 'system.'"

Or, as the Globe put it even more forcefully, the Massachusetts mental health system stands "for a state that sets a high standard for itself in human services, as a broken covenant with a population with great needs, spawning heartache and tragedy for everyone involved."

The Disability Law Center is going one step further. It recommends that Bridgewater State Hospital — the state's prison for people with mental illness — be placed into receivership.
