Every summer for the past 39 years, Circus Smirkus — a traveling youth circus — performs nearly 70 shows in small towns across New England. Kids from across the country ages 11 to 18 audition. Each year, 30 make it into the troupe and get to travel and perform with the big top circus for two months of the summer.

We caught up with with the circus when they made a stop in Waltham recently.

Troy Wunderle, artistic director of Circus Smirkus, which tweets @CircusSmirkus
