San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick made headlines this week for his refusal to stand for the national anthem before an NFL preseason game.

Kaepernick told NFL media, "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color."

Kaepernick's protest was met with both with vocal support for his right to free speech, and criticism of what some see as his disrespect for the American flag and the country's armed forces.
