A 31-year-old man was shot by Boston police in the South End early Sunday morning. Police Commissioner William Evans said deadly force was necessary because the man was holding a knife and began attacking the EMTs on the scene.

Hope Coleman, the victim's mother, had called the police to help her get her mentally unstable son to the hospital. She says he was unarmed at the time of the shooting.
