The J. Geils Band's "Centerfold" reached No. 1 on the charts in 1982, when the band was at the peak of its mainstream success. But before that, they were a Boston band, playing at venues like the Unicorn Coffee House on Boylston Street and the Tea Party in the South End.

Last night J. Geils, the founder and guitarist of the band, died. He was 71 years old.
