This is the Radio Boston rundown for Aug. 19. Steve Brown is our host:

  • The Orange Line shuts down tonight. We're joined by experts Jim Aloisi, former Massachusetts secretary of transportation, and Michael Curry, CEO of the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers, to talk about how the shutdown is impacting the community.
  • Nearly 250 years ago, Elizabeth Freeman sued for her freedom and won. She was the first enslaved African American to do so in Massachusetts, and she is now being honored in Sheffield with a bronze statue. Jennifer Owens, administrator at the Sheffield Historical Society, joins to talk about Freeman's contributions.
  • WBUR senior arts and culture reporter Cristela Guerra joins us to preview events happening this weekend in Boston and beyond, from a celebration of South Asian theater to a local R&B concert.

This program aired on August 19, 2022.
