This is the Aug. 23 rundown for Radio Boston. Tiziana Dearing is our host:

  • Next Tuesday marks one year since U.S. troops withdrew from Afghanistan. We check back in with two sisters from the country, who are now living in Worcester, about the last 12 months. Then we turn to Congressman Jake Auchincloss, a Marine Corps veteran, about what should come next for the embattled region.
  • Between July 2021 and March 2022, school districts in 26 states banned or opened investigations into more than a thousand books, according to a PEN America report. Many of those books explore LGBTQ themes. One hundred years ago, authors were struggling for the right to put such stories on paper. Octavio González, associate professor of English and creative writing at Wellesley College, teaches a popular course about LGBTQ literature from that era. In this installment of Brilliant Boston, González helps us apply the lessons of a century ago to today.

This program aired on August 23, 2022.
