How to make Boston's election-inspired cocktail, the Ward 8

We're less than a month away from the November election. Boston has its own cocktail that's supposedly inspired by an election win more than a century ago in the city.

We talk with Thea Engst, a long-time bartender and cocktail book author, about the Ward 8.

How to make the Ward 8:

2 oz Black tea and fig “bourbon" (see below)

½ oz orange juice

½ oz grenadine

¼ oz lemon

3 cherries

  1. Add all ingredients but the cherries to a shaker with ice. Shake and strain over 1 large cube in a rocks glass
  2. Garnish with cherries, skewered

Black tea and fig “bourbon” recipe

  1. Steep 1 black tea bag in ½ cup of hot water for 5 minutes
  2. Add ¼ cup of fig jam
  3. Whisk until cohesive, strain
  4. Store refrigerated for up to 4 days

1 oz fig-infused rye (see below)

1 oz fig-infused bourbon (see below)

½ oz lemon juice

½ oz simple syrup

1 dash Angostura

1 dash grenadine

  1. Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice. Shake and strain up into a coupe.

Fig rye and bourbon recipe

  1. Cut 4 to 5 medium-sized fresh figs and place in a 16 oz container
  2. Fill jar with rye or bourbon
  3. Seal and shake vigorously
  4. Allow to sit for 24 hours, strain
