Southern Vermont College in Bennington will close after the spring semester.

School leaders say staying open is no longer financially viable because of declining enrollment and increasing debt. It's a similar plight to the ones faced by other private, four-year liberal arts colleges in New England that have announced closures or serious financial woes.

It is now the third college in Vermont to announce it will close this spring.

"Personally, I am just very devastated by this because I think this is a great institution, but it's got a kind of greatness that's very difficult to keep going fiscally in the current climate," said Southern Vermont College President David Rees Evans.

Newbury College in Brookline, Massachusetts, will also close after this semester because of financial problems.
