Newly-elected lawmakers swept into power by demanding that the government cut spending. But how?

David Leonhardt of the New York Times walks us through the options and possible consequences of streamlining the federal budget. He even developed a so-called "deficit puzzle" that allows people to go online and try to make the cuts themselves. The goal: find $1.4 trillion per year through tax increases and spending cuts. Leonhardt writes the Economic Scene for the New York Times.

This segment aired on November 17, 2010.
