Yesterday would have been the late director Robert Altman's 86th birthday. Altman was acclaimed for directing "M*A*S*H," "Nashville," and "McCabe and Mrs. Miller," but his improvisational style had its critics and his career took a severe toll on his family life.

We revisit a conversation with author Mitchell Zuckoff, who put together the book "Robert Altman: The Oral Biography" from almost 200 interviews with Altman, his family and colleagues, including actors who thrived under his style and those who loathed it.
