A few months before he was assassinated, President John F. Kennedy visited Ireland, his ancestral home. He arrived in Dublin on June 26, 1963, right after delivering his famous speech in Berlin, when he said “ich bin ein,” or “I am a Berliner.” Of the visit, historian Arthur Schelisinger wrote “I imagine he was never easier, happier, more involved and detached, more completely himself.”
