Miami Combats Growing Feral Cat Population

Next week marks the beginning of spring which means new life, including more cats. In Miami-Dade County, the feral cat population is estimated at 300,000 and is expected to increase.

In 2012, Miami-Dade County Animal Services adopted the "trap-neuter-release" program, which is used in other major cities including New York and Houston, to help curb its feral cat population.

The program asks members of the community to trap wild cats in cages that they have bought or are provided by the city, and then bring them in for free neutering or spaying surgeries and vaccinations. The goal is to prevent the cats from reproducing and spreading disease.
