Louisiana Gov. Issues Executive Order To Better Protect Rape Survivors04:13

This article is more than 6 years old.

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal last night issued an executive order demanding better protection for survivors of sexual assault. This comes after the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals unveiled a plan to prohibit hospitals from billing sexual assault victims for medical exams and care related to the assault.

These actions were the result of a Times-Picayune investigation finding that some rape survivors were being charged thousands of dollars by hospitals for their forensic exams and treatment. The Department of Health proposal would also eliminate a current requirement that survivors file a police report in order to be eligible for their medical bills to be covered.

Reporter Rebecca Catalanello tells Here & Now's Jeremy Hobson about her investigation and the changes proposed.
