During his week broadcasting from Texas, Here & Now's Jeremy Hobson visited an unusual family reunion in San Antonio, where more than 200 members of the Maverick family recently gathered. The family name inspired the English word that we know today.

It started in the 1800s, when the Texas landowner and lawyer Samuel Maverick, the story goes, did not brand his cattle. When other people saw his cattle wandering without a brand, they would say “Those are Mavericks,” as in, they belong to Samuel Maverick. The term caught on and is now used today.
